When it comes to careers of the fashion variety, office-appropriate dressing can be hard to pin down. Here, we’re answering the questions about what to wear to work when your job requires you look professional and stylish.

Dress for the job you want—use your superiors as a guide.

If your boss is never wearing jeans and sneakers, you might want to rethink your routinely casual look.

Incorporate trends tastefully.

The latest trends from season to season are sure to influence your work wardrobe—just be sure the effect is understated enough to remain professional. For example, if you’re going to test-drive the pajama trend, opt for a tailored version in classic black. Wearing the top as a jacket over a crisp button-down and adding heels brings the look to office-friendly territory.

Let the day of the week inform your ensemble.

Mondays are power days best suited for your most professional outfit; by mid-week a little bit of edge is a welcome refresher to your look; and save your casual threads for Friday.

Reflect the aesthetic of your workplace.

Gauge the style climate of your environment. If you’re working at a luxury fashion magazine, the level of dress expected at the office is likely to be more formal than at a denim brand and less expressive than at an art gallery.

Invest in staple pieces you’ll wear forever.

Build out your work wardrobe with foundational pieces that will never go out of style. Oxford shirts, pencil skirts, tailored trousers, turtlenecks, blazers, pumps and a structured tote are all pieces worth spending a little more on for higher quality construction that will hold up over time.

Bring your personality through in your wardrobe.

But not too much. A pop of color, a girlish pump, a statement accessory can all convey your unique sense of style without creating a distraction.

Recognize the power of heels.

There’s nothing like a good pair of pumps to take an outfit to new heights. We highly recommend keeping a stash of essential styles under your desk to change into whenever your look needs a lift.

But embrace the privilege of wearing flats.

One of the advantages of working in fashion is that flats can have their moment as a stylish choice in footwear. And some days an easy loafer, sporty sneaker or elegant ballerina flat is exactly what you and your feet need.

Add intrigue with accessories.

A simple ensemble can go from basic to super-chic with the help of a whimsical heel or bag—just don’t go overboard. Pick one or two pieces and let them own the spotlight.

Discover the dressier side of denim.

We all love our denim, but it can make for an easy rut when all you wear is your standard skinnies everyday. Go beyond the basics and embrace new varietals of blue jean, like a dress or of-the-moment A-line skirt.

Small waist is needed a fashion assert and a beauty standards of our modern reality. We can’t offer you a permanent solution on making your waist look smaller but we can surely pass on the fashion tip on how to make your waist look smaller with some fashion items.

Color Coding

Here’s the deal. Light colors will make you appear bigger than you actually are. Dark colors, on the contrary, will make you look smaller. So, the best ways of showing off a small waist would be wearing a monochrome dark color dress or separates. If your top and bottom are of different colors, make sure the top is darker.

Another trick you can do is wear dresses with black cut-outs around the waist area, especially on the sides. There are many dresses out there with black side panels, and they’ve been designed for a special purpose; to make the customer look slimmer.

If you’re going with Colour blocking, make sure the lines are on the top and/or the bottom of your waist. Again, make sure the color of the waist area is darker than the rest.

LINES AND PRINTS

It’s not just about colors; if you need to make your waist look smaller. Do not ever wear horizontal stripes, they will make you look fuller. Pick vertical ones or make sure the shirt you’ve liked is really an exception and counter-affects your figure in some miraculous way.

Avoid horizontal line around the waist

Embrace vertical lines

Avoid small prints and large polka dots. These are the standard prints that fall into the slimmer or fuller categories.

Accessories Are Game Changers

Some accessories like wide belts can do the same trick of a fitted blazer. The good news is that our fashion experience has gotten so rich, that you can dare to wear a wide belt over anything, even over a cardigan; you can still pull it off like a pro.

Plan B. If you don’t want your waist to make the news this evening, distract the viewers’ attention by investing in brightly colored jewelry, scarves or handbags. Let your waist area go behind the scenes and continue the show with the accessories.

Oversize Clothes

One of the hottest trends at the moment, oversize clothing can’t make your waist look smaller, but it will definitely conceal the problem. Sweaters, T-shirts, baggy buttoned shirts and, most importantly, the poncho! These are some of the ways you can play the oversize card for your benefit. The only rule is to accentuate your legs by wearing skinny jeans, black leggings or high heels. Otherwise, you might end up looking like Santa on a vacation.

Wrap Dresses

Due to the V-cut, a wrap dress will make you look thinner, no matter where your issue of insecurity is located. Thanks to the wrap, your shoulders get more exposure and the belt sets a clear border before your waist starts. Some dresses might differ depending on the fabric that has been used, but they are overall a very helpful emergency dress to own.

High Heels

Once you step up on heels, they make your body look slick, your legs elongated, and your waist smaller. It’s also walking around on heels which is why many muscles of your body are working while you stand or walk. Flats, on the other hand, will make your body look shorter and your waist fuller.

Get the best results from this trick by wearing nude colors for high heels. The closer the color is to your skin tone, the more naturally they make you taller (as if they are extensions to your awesome legs).

The good news first: The new ASOS Africa collection that was done in cooperation with London-based designer Christine Mhando of the brand ChiChia is dope. I just received my order 10 minutes ago and here I am typing away wearing already the print halter dress. I got the last one and even bought a smaller size than I usually wear. But hey, a couple of more gym visits and green juice days and this will be my perfect sized dress 😉

The bad news: a lot of the cool pieces are already sold out. The ASOS Africa collection is usually very casual and easy going and the new Summer collection keeps that promise with floating but nonetheless stylish dresses, jumpsuits and pants. Prices are quite reasonable and the pieces were made ethically together with SOKO Kenya. So all in all a feel good / look good collection. Check-it out yourself here.
