    APiF: Please introduce your brand.
Mimmy Yeboah: I’m a self-taught New York City based designer. My brand is basically me, Mimmy Yeboah. I create exclusive minimal statement pieces for women, putting more of a focus on the female frame. All of my fabrics are chosen, cut and constructed to create confidence as you walk with your head high wearing a garment from Mimmy Yeboah.

APiF: What is your professional background?
Mimmy: I might not have a “real” professional background for fashion design, as I am self-taught. But I have taken classes at Parsons and FIT. Parsons is where I was taught fashion by force, as an elementary student. Parsons offered pre-College classes, where my brother and I took art and drawing classes. Once we were older, we went into the different classes like fashion design or animation.

I dreaded fashion at Parsons only because of my fear to explore my creative side without being judged, as the majority of the kids seemed to know what they were doing. As I got older fashion became embedded into me and one day I decided I wanted to sew my sketches and I just started. That is when I eventually decided to take two classes at FIT to improve on my basic skills. Because knowing the basics is important.

APiF: Your swimwear is very unique – what was the inspiration for the design?
Mimmy: I’m a June baby, so I love creating pieces for the summer. Swimwear is always interesting. The ideas and inspiration usually comes from music and wanting to be in the sun, sporting something different and cool.
APiF: What is your cultural heritage and how does it influence your designs?
Mimmy: I’m Ghanaian, and I make sure every one knows that in a not so subtle way. I want everyone to know Ghana. So my heritage definitely influences my designs. I feel like I create better when I’m in Ghana anyways.
APiF: What should we look for when buying swimwear – any recommendations?
Mimmy: Well when I’m looking for swimwear, I’m looking for what fits my boobs because I have G’s. So I want support! But I want it to be cute. But in general I believe looking for the right color for your complexion is important. You don’t want to look washed-out in the beautiful sun!
APiF: Any tips for emerging Designers?
Mimmy: Never give up! “Keep on keeping on” as a good friend of mine would say.

The 2nd Annual Africa Gives Back International Gala team has released the official campaign photos for the 2016 event with the theme “Everyday Warriors”.

Africa Gives Back International’s (AGBI) philosophy is that everyone, no matter what race or background is a warrior; and all have battle scars to show for it; either metaphorically, mentally or physically. These scars can be from one’s trials and tribulations and life’s experiences. Furthermore, how one uses and hones those experiences into a positive and productive nature further establishes one as an “Everyday Warrior”.

The “Everyday Warriors” campaign is a 17 photo exhibit focus around the concept a warrior through the notions of Leadership, Strength and Empowerment. All of which are shown in a different light – through a juxtaposition of ROYALTY and WARRIORS – Being one and the same. This is achieved by the meticulous placement and use of Medieval Armor, Ankara Prints, Couture African Fashions, and Melaninated Ambassadors (Models).

I was recently in Germany for a family event in Munich, Bavaria. In Germany, stores are closed on Sundays and they start to shut down around 3 or 4 pm on Saturdays. My train arrived at 3.30 pm in Munich, which gave me a very short window for an important mission besides attending the family event: I wanted to check out Noh Nee, a store owned by the two Cameroonian sisters Marie and Rahmée, that sells Dirndl with an African twist.

In case you don’t know what a Dirndl is: it’s a traditional dress worn in Bavaria as well as Austria, inspired by the clothing of Alps peasants. So as an Afro German, it’s something I wouldn’t be caught dead in, as it used to represent everything I didn’t identify with – a kind of traditional, conservative, “Germanness”. But here I was suddenly leaving messages on an answer machine and asking the store owner of Noh Nee, if she could keep her store a bit longer open, so that I could come by and check it out.

My sister came along reluctantly and mentioned several times that she wasn’t intending to buy anything. I ensured her that I just wanted to have a look and take some pics for the blog :-).

What can I say, we ended up doing more than just having a quick peek. We met one of the owners – Rahmée – who was super nice and welcoming. She showed us around the store and told us the inspiration for different designs, where the collections were made and how much work went into each design. We had a blast, tried on shoes, Dirndl, coats, accessories and talked about everything under the sun and what’s hot and not in the African Fashion industry.

What makes the “Dirndl à l’Africaine” so special and unique for me is that it combines both of my heritages in an excellent and stylish way. The secret about a Dirndl: it looks awesome on any body type. It accentuates the waist and highlights the chest.

The dresses from Noh Nee are not cheap, but therefore they are exceptionally well made. Everything is just a real design piece. Rahmée and her sister Marie make sure that the fabrics are high quality and use besides prints from Vlisco also fabrics that originate from Ghana, Senegal etc. The brand also works together with Senegalese artist and textile designer Aissa Dione.

And of course, I ended up buying a Dirndl! It has already become a timeless staple in my wardrobe. My sister bought a coat and several accessories. We arrived very late for the family dinner, but it was totally worth it! Go check out Noh Nee when you are in Munich or visit their online store.

Comment below and let me know how you like this combination of German tradition and African fabrics!

Zimbabwe Fashion International is proud to announce that it has finally closed the gap and allowed Zimbabwe designers to have access to the market. This gap is being bridged by the launch of The Sp_ce, a unique and artistically themed showroom that has been created to celebrate and sell the best in Zimbabwe’s fashion, design and art.The introduction of The Sp_ce will mean that staple Zimbabwe Fashion Week four-day fashion showcase that has traditionally been held in August and September of every year will be postponed for 2016.

Whilst the traditional four day showcase has been postponed, Zimbabwe Fashion Week will continue its corporate social responsibility drive in empowering the youth who have a passion for fashion by equipping them with the necessary tools for success through its Young Designers Programme. The Young Designer Programme is a developmental project that was started in 2012 and takes 10 aspiring designers to be part of a month long workshop that focuses on theory and practical lessons from the best in the industry. Mr. Colin Ratisai, the YDP’s Director proudly states “The Young Designers Programme has empowered over 60 applicants and transformed dreams into reality for those who love fashion. I am excited to continue to mentor young aspirational fashion designers with the knowledge and skills that they need.”

The young designers who will be selected this year will be tasked with creating fashion that is in line with this year’s theme –Fashion Refashioned. This theme focuses on eco-friendly and sustainable ways to produce garments that are trendy and fashionable.

Selection for the Young Designer’s Programme will be announced during the course of this week through Zimbabwe Fashion Week’s social media pages.
