    APiF: Please introduce your brand.
Mimmy Yeboah: I’m a self-taught New York City based designer. My brand is basically me, Mimmy Yeboah. I create exclusive minimal statement pieces for women, putting more of a focus on the female frame. All of my fabrics are chosen, cut and constructed to create confidence as you walk with your head high wearing a garment from Mimmy Yeboah.

APiF: What is your professional background?
Mimmy: I might not have a “real” professional background for fashion design, as I am self-taught. But I have taken classes at Parsons and FIT. Parsons is where I was taught fashion by force, as an elementary student. Parsons offered pre-College classes, where my brother and I took art and drawing classes. Once we were older, we went into the different classes like fashion design or animation.

I dreaded fashion at Parsons only because of my fear to explore my creative side without being judged, as the majority of the kids seemed to know what they were doing. As I got older fashion became embedded into me and one day I decided I wanted to sew my sketches and I just started. That is when I eventually decided to take two classes at FIT to improve on my basic skills. Because knowing the basics is important.

APiF: Your swimwear is very unique – what was the inspiration for the design?
Mimmy: I’m a June baby, so I love creating pieces for the summer. Swimwear is always interesting. The ideas and inspiration usually comes from music and wanting to be in the sun, sporting something different and cool.
APiF: What is your cultural heritage and how does it influence your designs?
Mimmy: I’m Ghanaian, and I make sure every one knows that in a not so subtle way. I want everyone to know Ghana. So my heritage definitely influences my designs. I feel like I create better when I’m in Ghana anyways.
APiF: What should we look for when buying swimwear – any recommendations?
Mimmy: Well when I’m looking for swimwear, I’m looking for what fits my boobs because I have G’s. So I want support! But I want it to be cute. But in general I believe looking for the right color for your complexion is important. You don’t want to look washed-out in the beautiful sun!
APiF: Any tips for emerging Designers?
Mimmy: Never give up! “Keep on keeping on” as a good friend of mine would say.

There is nothing worse than cakey concealer. Instead of masking your blemishes, it just makes things look worse. You aren’t doomed to this problem provided you know how to get concealer on properly to prevent it from happening. Don’t worry. It’s pretty simple stuff and the payoff is huge. Here’s what the experts at Self magazine say you should be doing if you’re sick and tired of your concealer caking up on you.
      1. CHOOSE A LIGHTWEIGHT FORMULA AS YOUR FIRST STEP
The thicker your concealer is, the higher the chances of it caking when you put it on. Makeup experts say that you have to choose a lightweight formula so that it goes on smooth and stays that way. This type of concealer is specially designed to provide the coverage you want while fully absorbing into your skin at the same time so that it’s pretty much doing its job while also being invisible.
      2. APPLY YOUR PRODUCT WITH A LIGHT HAND
The more concealer you wear, the cakier it’s going to look. You only need a small bit of provide the coverage you need if you have the right product. Smooth a very thin layer of concealer over your blemishes and then dab on a just a tad more, as needed. Apply foundation first so that you have the base coverage you need and then you won’t need so much concealer afterward.
      3. DON’T PUT CONCEALER EVERYWHERE
Here’s a tip from the #best makeup experts in town. Stand about two feet away from the mirror. Anything you can’t see from there doesn’t need to be covered with concealer. No one is probably getting that close to you anyway so if you can’t see if from that distance, no one else will be able to either.
      4. COMBINE CONCEALER WITH SOME TINTED MOISTURIZER
Tinted moisturizer is great for giving your #face a subtle and healthy glow. Using it in conjunction with your concealer helps the latter blend more evenly into your skin so that it covers your spots without looking totally obvious. Apply the moisturizer first and you’ll be able to see where you need to dab on the concealer.
      5. USE A TAPERED BRUSH TO APPLY YOUR CONCEALER
Instead of covering your blemishes with your fingers, it’s better to use a tapered brush, say the experts. When you use your fingers, it’s easier to get too much concealer in a specific spot. On the other hand, using a brush gives you much more control over how much product you’re getting on any one spot. Plus, as the brush fans out on your #skin, it helps blend the concealer into the area around your blemishes.
      6. YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO USE A MATTE CONCEALER
The opposite of matte is shiny and I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I don’t want my face to #look shiny. By using a matte concealer you prevent a shiny appearance while also covering your blemishes at the same #time. Tap the concealer on with a brush, as said above, to get the best coverage.

What are your thoughts on concealer? What brand would you recommend?

In this two-part post, hairstylist Dionne Smith shows us some gorgeous ways she styles natural hair.

I was inspired to show of the beauty of natural hair working across different textures, showing the versatility of curl manipulation.

I created different textures using different setting methods and styling accordingly.

All looks created are completely the models own hair except the 2 side braids where extension was added for length.

Be inspired to embrace your natural hair and get creative with it.”
We really like her use of threads in one of the styles, it’s something that hasn’t been used in a while but we see it making a come back in more stylish ways that the old school “Binta goes to school” looks.

I’ve had problematic skin since I was 14, so I’ve tried pretty much everything under the sun in terms of skincare. During my endless search for the miracle products that will change my skin forever, I stumbled across several articles promoting going ‘All Natural’ with my routine and simplifying it to just cleansing and moisturising. This was something I hadn’t tried, and after years of using harsh chemicals and only getting mediocre results, I was happy to embrace the change. So for 2 weeks I used a popular Nigerian brand of Black Soap and Shea Butter.

My skin quickly deteriorated into its worst state ever. I broke out in huge cysts everywhere, even in places I don’t normally get spots like my forehead, and it took a month for my skin to get back to its normal state of a few blemishes here and there.

I’m such a big believer in natural ingredients though- I only use organic products on my body. Some readers might have heard about my upcoming collaboration with BathKandy; a beauty company that produces skin loving, artisanal bath and body products using the finest natural ingredients. This is because natural products can be just as good as chemical ones (if not better) without any potential side effects in the long term. So here is a rundown of how I’ve tried to be #TeamNatural by incorporating natural ingredients into my routine, and the results I have gotten.

      Eye Makeup Remover

I’ve tried wipes, micellar water, and different brands of eye makeup remover. But nothing beats good old Olive Oil. It removes even the most waterproof mascara, and moisturises your lashes which helps them grow longer and stronger. Unfortunately I can’t use Olive Oil when I have lash extensions in (as oil weakens the glue). So I’m quite happy with the Simple ‘Kind To Eyes’ Eye Makeup Remover.

      Cleanser

I was hesitant to try black soap again after my first experience, but I had seen so many good reviews about the Fig Health Store Brightening Turmeric Black Soap that I was willing to take one for The Nicole Code team and review it for my readers. This was in November, and I’ve used it every single day since then. It is beautiful! It leaves my skin thoroughly clean but not stripped of all moisture.

      Toner

I’ve tried using diluted Organic Apple Cider Vinegar which is supposed to be amazing for blemish prone skin like mine, with little to no results. I’ve also tried green tea and diluted lemon juice. I think with toner, I have to stick to proper acid like Salicylic which really exfoliates my skin. I occasionally spritz green tea on my face after I use my Salicylic toner to give my skin a boost of hydration and antioxidants.

      Mask

I’ve tried so many masks, but my favourite is the Turmeric and Bentonite Clay mask. I’m obsessed with this stuff. Its very quick and easy to make at home, and gives great results. I use it twice a week to draw out impurities from my pores and speed up the healing of any blemishes. My skin visibly improves everytime I use this.

      Moisturiser

As stated earlier, I tried shea butter and it was an epic fail. Shea Butter is a big no if you have Acne prone skin. I’ve also tried both Coconut and Jojoba Oil. Jojoba is probably the closest to what I need because it helps control my oil production (it ‘tricks’ your skin into thinking it has produced enough oil because it is the same consistency as sebum) and it gives my foundation a beautiful glow. But I found that after a while my pores started to get congested. Which really really sucked. However I saw an Instagram post by MyHairMyBeautyNG which recommended the Josie Maran Argan Oil so I might give that a go.

      Eye Cream

A lot of people swear by Almond Oil or Shea Butter around their eyes. I find that though they definitely moisturise the eye area, when I use either of them at night my eyes are a tad puffy in the morning. And they are way too heavy to use during the day especially if you use eye makeup. My current faves are the Oriki Mineralised Intensive Eye Treatment during the day, and the Clarins Super Restorative Total Eye Concentrate at night.

In conclusion, you could try to find a balance between both kinds of products. But if all natural works for you, that’s awesome. If you are big on chemicals then go for it. Just pay close attention to what your skin tells you and cater to its needs accordingly.

      Until Next Time,

      Nicole xx
