    APiF: Please introduce your brand.
Mimmy Yeboah: I’m a self-taught New York City based designer. My brand is basically me, Mimmy Yeboah. I create exclusive minimal statement pieces for women, putting more of a focus on the female frame. All of my fabrics are chosen, cut and constructed to create confidence as you walk with your head high wearing a garment from Mimmy Yeboah.

APiF: What is your professional background?
Mimmy: I might not have a “real” professional background for fashion design, as I am self-taught. But I have taken classes at Parsons and FIT. Parsons is where I was taught fashion by force, as an elementary student. Parsons offered pre-College classes, where my brother and I took art and drawing classes. Once we were older, we went into the different classes like fashion design or animation.

I dreaded fashion at Parsons only because of my fear to explore my creative side without being judged, as the majority of the kids seemed to know what they were doing. As I got older fashion became embedded into me and one day I decided I wanted to sew my sketches and I just started. That is when I eventually decided to take two classes at FIT to improve on my basic skills. Because knowing the basics is important.

APiF: Your swimwear is very unique – what was the inspiration for the design?
Mimmy: I’m a June baby, so I love creating pieces for the summer. Swimwear is always interesting. The ideas and inspiration usually comes from music and wanting to be in the sun, sporting something different and cool.
APiF: What is your cultural heritage and how does it influence your designs?
Mimmy: I’m Ghanaian, and I make sure every one knows that in a not so subtle way. I want everyone to know Ghana. So my heritage definitely influences my designs. I feel like I create better when I’m in Ghana anyways.
APiF: What should we look for when buying swimwear – any recommendations?
Mimmy: Well when I’m looking for swimwear, I’m looking for what fits my boobs because I have G’s. So I want support! But I want it to be cute. But in general I believe looking for the right color for your complexion is important. You don’t want to look washed-out in the beautiful sun!
APiF: Any tips for emerging Designers?
Mimmy: Never give up! “Keep on keeping on” as a good friend of mine would say.

The 2nd Annual Africa Gives Back International Gala team has released the official campaign photos for the 2016 event with the theme “Everyday Warriors”.

Africa Gives Back International’s (AGBI) philosophy is that everyone, no matter what race or background is a warrior; and all have battle scars to show for it; either metaphorically, mentally or physically. These scars can be from one’s trials and tribulations and life’s experiences. Furthermore, how one uses and hones those experiences into a positive and productive nature further establishes one as an “Everyday Warrior”.

The “Everyday Warriors” campaign is a 17 photo exhibit focus around the concept a warrior through the notions of Leadership, Strength and Empowerment. All of which are shown in a different light – through a juxtaposition of ROYALTY and WARRIORS – Being one and the same. This is achieved by the meticulous placement and use of Medieval Armor, Ankara Prints, Couture African Fashions, and Melaninated Ambassadors (Models).

Happy days are here again. The return to classic glamour means this season’s styles have a put-together polish that actually flatters (real) women’s curves.

    High Society

Here’s an oldie but goody—the car coat. Lightweight and tailored, this thigh-length style is a great spring layer that you don’t have to remove once you’re inside. (And you won’t want to, since it spiffs up almost anything you wear underneath it.)

    Lush Life

This lavishly textured style has all the grace and poise of classic leading ladies—but with a price tag that suits average folks. And unlike most scratchy and stiff secondhand-store finds, it’s amazingly comfortable, thanks to soft, stretchy cotton.

    Get shirty

    Get shirty

Leave it to a timeless white button-down to take the June Cleaver primness out of a floor-length silk skirt—and to make a rowdy mix of bold shades (red, fuchsia, turquoise, and green) get along just swell.

    Accent on Glamour

    model-wearing-turban

Got a thing for accents? Stick with a contemporary outfit—say, a structured top and skinny pants—then layer on blast-from-the-past accessories: a pile of pearls, Bakelite-esque bangles, maybe even a turban headband.

    Now and Then

    modelwearingblueskirt

Another way to keep from looking as if you stepped out of a time machine? Choose pieces that offer a mash-up of old and new. Here, of-the-moment stripes and trendy cobalt make a corsage blouse and a below-the-knee swing skirt altogether modern.

Now that summer is in full swing, it’s time to dust off your essential pool slides. The only problem? They don’t exactly scream chic. We can’t all rock the Adidas slides like Gigi Hadid does.

Luckily, designers embraced the sandal style this season in a variety of luxe treatments — meaning you’ll surely be the best-dressed, both at the pool or a party.

    Texture Play
While comfy, a slide sandal can also instantly add pop to your outfit via texture. Sanayi 313’s tiered raffia style adds instant edge.

SANAYI 313 raffia slide sandal, $1,005. Rag & Bone hat, Current / Elliott skirt, Lanvin necklace, Palm Angels T-shirt.

    Punchy Print
A printed slide offers a more unexpected and elegant take, such as Dolce & Gabbana’s palm print style with embellishment.

DOLCE & GABBANA palm print slide, $945. Rachel Comey dress, PB 0110 bag, Linda Farrow sunglasses, Wouters and Hendrix earrings.

    Blue Jeans
Add cool factor to your look with Ancient Greek’s frayed denim crisscross style. Pair with 1970s-style accessories.

ANCIENT GREEK SANDALS denim slide, $165. Isabel Marant necklace, Gucci bag, Chloe top. M.I.H. jeans, Dior sunglasses.

    Refined Satin
Yes, a slide can be worn for evening. No. 21’s satin bow style is a classy companion to that perfect floral dress.

    Statement Shag
Add some punch with Tibi’s colored feather slide. But keep the rest of the look tasteful with a simple tee and similar-hued skirt.

TIBI shaggy slide, $395. Tory Burch skirt, A.P.C. t-shirt, Thierry Lasry sunglasses, Clare V tote bag.

Neutrals are a fashion staple, however this season warmer hues like russet and tan were chosen over stone and light beige that were prominent through AW16 collections. The versatility and yet spectacular feel it gives is perhaps why it has warmed its way into hearts and wardrobes.

Pair your russet or tan clothes with white, navy blue, green and yellow fashion items, (ie shoe, bags, scarfs, jackets, ties and others)

Contrary to popular beliefs and views; the pink and green combination looks great together in almost every shade; and no it is not the same thing as colour blocking. Pair it with pink, brown, orange, silver or black shoes.

Opt for shades as your skin tone.

Will you be rocking it soon?

Every lady loves the versatile boyfriend shirt. It takes you to work and all those corporate brunches. But do u know you can style the stern boyfriend shirt into an evening slayer? Seriously, you can turn these shirts into evening dresses. If you can tie a knot and button a button, you can make these dresses. Follow up to see how it works.

      The 2-Shirt Knot Dress

      Wear the first shirt

Wrap the second shirt around your waist and button it up to create the skirt.

Tie the sleeves over the untucked front of the main shirt and smooth out any lumps or bulges.

Roll up your sleeves and leave the top few buttons of your main shirt undone for a more flattering shape, especially if the shirt is particularly loose.

      The 2-Shirt Pencil Dress

      Wear the first shirt.

Wrap the second shirt around your waist and button it up to create the skirt, tucking your main shirt in front and back.

Bring the sleeves of the second shirt around to the front and tie them firmly around your hips.

Roll down the collar of the second shirt to create a sleeker, more defined waistband.

For a more feminine touch, tie the sleeves of the second shirt into a bow instead of just a basic knot.

      The 3-Shirt Side-Split Dress

      Wear the first shirt.

Button two shirts together around your waist by their collars and turn them so you have one shirt in back and one shirt in front.

Tie the arms of the front shirt behind your back, at your waist, underneath the back shirt so the knotted sleeves are hidden from view. Make sure to carefully smooth out the front of what is now your skirt as you do this to avoid any unflattering lumps.

Take the sleeves of the shirt making up the back of your skirt, and tie them low but firmly across your hips.
