The Spring-Summer collection 2016 by Senegalese brand Selly Raby Kane is a homage to “the old Dakar its Romanticism, its effortless style its economical optimism and the mythical elegance of the Senegalese woman.” It is a mix of different prints, flower prints and embroidery. The collection is titled “A Day with Miss N’Diaye” and is narrating the story of a girl, that becomes a pilgrim in her grandmother’s house. Is it just me, but I don’t quite get that story when looking at the images. Maybe a pilgrim in her closet as some of the designs have a vintage twist to them. My favorite look has to be the pants and top with the blue & white plaids. It’s just a super cool and chic look.

The brand was created in 2008 by Senegalese designer Selly Raby. The designs are a mixture of urban, Afro and pop influences partnered with traditional and contemporary fabrics.

Dimeji Alara is all the buzz in the Nigerian fashion world right now for resigning from his high profile job as editor at Genevieve magazine. Prior to working at Genevieve magazine, Alara was a founding editor at Style Mania magazine.

There have been lots of speculations about why he left and know we get to hear from the man himself on why he left, in an interview as he covers the second issue of MADE Edit magazine in an outfit by Tokyo James.

Dimeji Alara on the cover of MADE Edit

Dimeji says “The truth is, I love being alive. And I love feeling free. So if I can’t have those things, then I feel like a caged animal, and I’d rather not be in a cage. It’s tough as a creative person to give your best when you have very little time to create, especially when your work becomes commercial and people expect you to constantly churn out your best every month.

As a creative person, you do need time to vet your ideas, love and hate them, scrap and come up with something else. I barely had that time at Genevieve, everything was moving so fast, and I was dealing with exhaustion. I started hating everything I created and couldn’t even stand the sight of it.”

He went on to say “I did have the opportunity to work with some amazing people at Genevieve, people I’m still very much in touch with till today, and I’m very grateful for that. I had a very understanding publisher too, even though we didn’t always agree.”

In regards to plans for the future, he discloses that “Somehow, I’m enjoying not knowing what’s going to happen next, what my next step would be, or where I’ll find myself tomorrow. It’s a mix of fear and excitement.

Call me crazy, but I think that’s what I love about my life. There’s no maniacal master plan. It’s just unfolding before me. I have been getting quite a number of offers, but I am being very careful as to what I accept. I don’t want to act on impulse and just jump at anything that comes my way. For me it has to be substantial and add to my brand. I’m not desperate”

It’s clear there is no bad blood between Alara and his former employers and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors. You can read the full interview in the magazine.

The B|E collection is dedicated to the woman who is motivated to be everything she can be.

The womenswear brand has blossomed through their debut collection (the Bloom). Since then, it has been a “functional” and “exciting” process for their head designer Alima Bello; restructuring the organisation after buying out her former partner Kemi Edu and being nominated as ‘The Emerging Fashion Brand of the Year’ at the upcoming Ghana Fashion Awards.

She took inspiration from these experiences to create a collection to motivate the 21st century woman to become everything she can be. Any woman no matter her career or lifestyle can express herself style-wise with pieces from this collection hence, “Become Everything” (B|E).

Their Head Designer expresses ‘Becoming Everything’ through their minimalist design philosophy, FLIRTING with figure hugging color blocked crop tops, blush pink hued dresses with long lines, comfortable wide leg crepe pants, Vlisco ankara blending seamlessly with lace and bold cut pleated dresses. We also named our pieces after different roles and actions of women in society. e.g. Lady Kaftan, Nun Dress and Swinger Dress. Enjoy the pictures below….

The emerging designers series is a brand product of internationally acclaimed powerhouse; the BlackNBold Fashion House. The series is geared towards the recognition and promotion of Nigerian designers who are doing pretty well in their field. The series debuted in 2013, and the fashion house has gone on to produce three successful emerging designers’ series that have been publicized on major blogs and magazines in Nigeria.

Since its emergence, the series has grown in size from its original ‘Top Ten Emerging Designers” to becoming “Top 15 Emerging Designers in 2015”. The increase in number is undoubtedly a positive growth as the fashion industry has since grown between 2014 and 2015.

The Top 15 Emerging Designers is aimed at encouraging, promoting and celebrating outstanding young designers who have been able to distinguish themselves from their peers. The selection of designers is done by a council of fashion elders who surf through designers and eventually come to a conclusive last 15.

The members of the council include a fashion elder from Genevieve magazine, Complete Fashion Magazine, OloriSupergal.com, Goldmyne, Stylevitae.com, 360 nobs, Pulse.ng, Sharonojong.com and other individual elders. The members of the council sent in their top 15 names and the most recurring fifteen names were reviewed and finally contacted. The top 15 designers will be officially unveiled and awarded during the BlackNBold Man of the Year and Woman of the Year award ceremony in Lagos.
