There is nothing worse than cakey concealer. Instead of masking your blemishes, it just makes things look worse. You aren’t doomed to this problem provided you know how to get concealer on properly to prevent it from happening. Don’t worry. It’s pretty simple stuff and the payoff is huge. Here’s what the experts at Self magazine say you should be doing if you’re sick and tired of your concealer caking up on you.
1. CHOOSE A LIGHTWEIGHT FORMULA AS YOUR FIRST STEP
The thicker your concealer is, the higher the chances of it caking when you put it on. Makeup experts say that you have to choose a lightweight formula so that it goes on smooth and stays that way. This type of concealer is specially designed to provide the coverage you want while fully absorbing into your skin at the same time so that it’s pretty much doing its job while also being invisible.
2. APPLY YOUR PRODUCT WITH A LIGHT HAND
The more concealer you wear, the cakier it’s going to look. You only need a small bit of provide the coverage you need if you have the right product. Smooth a very thin layer of concealer over your blemishes and then dab on a just a tad more, as needed. Apply foundation first so that you have the base coverage you need and then you won’t need so much concealer afterward.
3. DON’T PUT CONCEALER EVERYWHERE
Here’s a tip from the #best makeup experts in town. Stand about two feet away from the mirror. Anything you can’t see from there doesn’t need to be covered with concealer. No one is probably getting that close to you anyway so if you can’t see if from that distance, no one else will be able to either.
4. COMBINE CONCEALER WITH SOME TINTED MOISTURIZER
Tinted moisturizer is great for giving your #face a subtle and healthy glow. Using it in conjunction with your concealer helps the latter blend more evenly into your skin so that it covers your spots without looking totally obvious. Apply the moisturizer first and you’ll be able to see where you need to dab on the concealer.
5. USE A TAPERED BRUSH TO APPLY YOUR CONCEALER
Instead of covering your blemishes with your fingers, it’s better to use a tapered brush, say the experts. When you use your fingers, it’s easier to get too much concealer in a specific spot. On the other hand, using a brush gives you much more control over how much product you’re getting on any one spot. Plus, as the brush fans out on your #skin, it helps blend the concealer into the area around your blemishes.
6. YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO USE A MATTE CONCEALER
The opposite of matte is shiny and I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I don’t want my face to #look shiny. By using a matte concealer you prevent a shiny appearance while also covering your blemishes at the same #time. Tap the concealer on with a brush, as said above, to get the best coverage.

What are your thoughts on concealer? What brand would you recommend?

Every bride deserves to look flawless on their wedding day. Makeup is very essential because your pictures will be filled with your face and there is nothing like a next day repeat to make everything better. If you haven’t been diligent about your skin care routine now’s the time to begin. Getting regular facials makes a big difference in your skin’s texture and helps you have the best base for makeup.

Schedule a trial with a pro-makeup artist or do a trail yourself(doing your own makeup) so you get to know how you will look like on that day. Put facial and eye primer on the top of your makeup shopping list because your makeup is suppose to last for the whole day (ceremony, reception, selfie, dance etc.) and there will be no time for touch ups.

Do not panic because of last minute break-outs or pimples, that’s why they made concealers. Choose a concealer that looks natural and merge nicely with your skin and a lighter one for highlighting your face.

Go neutral on that day, extreme bold and shiny makeups can be done your for pre wedding shoot, engagement etc. You don’t want to look extremely different than what you already look like, then you have you explain yourself to everyone because your wedding day picture doesn’t look like you.

Use the bronzer with extra care, you don’t want to look orange or glittery because that can ruin your picture. Add a glow to your face by applying a soft, shimmery highlighter.

Since a lot of women shed tears of joy on that big day, i will recommend the use of a waterproof mascara and eye shadow so that they don’t smudge when the tears begin.

To me a wedding makeup is all about the eyes, they make everything pop. Warm color tones like purple, brown, black, pink palettes should be used for the eye shadow. soft and neutral color tones should be used for the lips.

Don’t forget the most important thing, make sure your personality shows in your makeup, you can go bright, shiny and bold if that’s what you want for your big day

The black lipstick at a point was mostly used by the Gothic folks, biker females, runway models, rock starts or for Halloween but of cause that’s all in the past like many other things because the once gloomy makeup has gained a hold in the mainstream beauty. The black lipstick can be fun and exciting, so if you’ve ever wanted to try out the black lipstick but don’t know the proper way to do this? then here are some steps you should follow to have the final result looking perfect.

1. There are different qualities of the black lipstick and of cause different brands, there are matte versions which is different from the drug store waxy crayons so make sure yo find the right black lipstick for you.

2. The dark lipstick has a tendency of emphasizing every corner of your mouth therefore you need to have a smooth canvas. Exfoliate your lips by using a gentle scrub or sugar to get rid of the dry skin then moisturize with a lip balm or coconut oil afterwards.

3. Dark lip require some tender loving care compared to the others, this helps it sty longer so either use a lip-liner (black ) to establish a canvas or simple apply a little black with a brush on your lips, buff with a tissue till it looks like a stain then re-apply.

4. The temptation to play this look up would upstage your black lips so its best to stare clear of really loud eyes and coverage and go with something light and neutral. Everything should be classic and soft to create the perfect balance.

5. Your choice of an attire matters a lot so you won’t walk out looking like a Halloween monster of some sorts so bright colors like pink and neon really goes well. The nudes are not a bad deal either.

The runways are flush with beauty inspiration galore. Here are a few of the trends to try in the next few weeks.

1. Flushed, Rosy Cheeks

Set your summer bronzer aside and embrace the rosy-cheek trend! Apply a pretty pink to the apples of your cheeks… it’s truly that simple!

2. Red Lips

Red lips are classic, always in style. But this fall especially, you can’t go wrong with a quick swipe of your favorite red.

3. Metallic Shadow

Metallic shadow and liner have been making a slow but steady comeback, but they’ve finally made it big at NYFW. Treat yourself to a bronze shadow (like Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow in Synergy) and use it sparingly for an office-ready #look, or layer it on for a night out.

4. Graphic Liner

This is such a fantastic trend, a natural evolution of the cat’s eye and winged liner. It’s bold, creative, and fun. How will you wear graphic liner?

5. Smudgy Eyes

Like red lips, smoky #eyes are timeless. This season, though, make them messy, smudgy, and you’ll be runway-ready.

6. Finger Waves

Take a page from Gatsby and try finger waves! They’ll add a little glam to your daytime work and your date-night looks.

Which of these trends are you dying to try? Or is there another #look you saw on the Local & International runways you want to borrow?

Makeup has become quite complicated today. With all the new techniques and tools you need to achieve a great makeup look, it almost seems like rocket science. However, there are a few tools that you cannot forego – one of them is mascara.

This is a vital tool for makeup beginners who want to make sure they get the best look from the basic tools they have acquired. Your mascara is very much like your lipstick, or getting your eyebrows filled – you sort of can’t do without it.

This lovely beauty tool has loads of benefits – It opens up your eyes and emphasizes their shape; and if you really don’t want to put on a bunch of powders and foundations, all you have to do is swipe a few coats of mascara on your eyelashes and apply some lipstick. You’ll get the full glam look in minutes.

So what type of mascara should you get? How do you apply the mascara? Is a mascara primer necessary? How do you take it off? These are the questions we are going to be answering today!

Check it out!

What type of mascara should I get?
The key to getting the most out of a mascara is in the wand/brush. Different companies produce mascaras with different brushes and they all have different uses.

I personally like to use two or three mascaras, sometimes one after the other, because they serve different purposes. I use one for volume, usually theMaybelline Colossal Volum’ Express, followed by the Maybelline Rocket Volum’ Express for length, and then I finally comb through it all for definition with the small brush from Maybelline‘s Great Lash mascara. I also use this for my bottom lashes because of the precision it gives.

The image above shows the different mascara brushes and how they can be used. Here’s some more information about each brush:

  1. Flat Comb Wands: This mascara wand is usually flat and small and has evenly-spaced little teeth. The teeth are specially designed to define and separate the eyelashes during application. It is great for improving length, but it does not add a lot of volume.
  2. Straight Wands: This can be tilted and used at any angle to get great coverage over every single lash – even the smaller ones on the inner corners of your eyes. It works great if you have large eyes or full lashes.
  3. Curved Wands: This is great for that added eyelash curl. They bend your lashes backwards and lift them upwards to give your eyes a nice feminine look during & after application.
  4. Cone Taper Wands: This is also known as the ‘heart-shaped brush’. Tapered wands are basically the same as straight wands except they taper off to a point at the tip. You can get nice volume and length from the thick part of the brush, and you can also use the tip to pick out individual lashes for extra definition.
  5. Oversized/Spherical Wands: This wand works the same way as a regular mascara wand – it is only a lot smaller. Like a comb wand, spherical wands are great for separating and defining each lash, however you have to work in smaller sections. The smaller size means you can be accurate and pick out each individual lash, but the shape means you might transfer product onto your eyelids more often, especially if you have hooded lids.

How do I apply the mascara?
So, you’ve finally bought your mascara. Now how do you apply it. Here are some tips that have helped me out.

  1. You should apply mascara from the bottom of your lashes to the top in smooth and easy strokes. Be sure to apply your mascara in 2-3 coats. Apply the first coat, let it dry for about 3-5 minutes and then go over the lashes again with another coat.
  2. When you remove the wand from the bottle, scrape off excess in the process. This prevents clumsy excess on your lashes and your mascara from quickly finishing.
  3. During application, wiggle the wand left to right at the base of lashes. Pull the wand up and through the lashes, wiggling as you go along. The wiggling action is key because it separates lashes, and reduces the chances of clumpy lashes.
  4. Clean up messes you make with a q-tip (cotton bud). Big brushes tend to be a little clumsy, even though they give you the most coverage. So when and if you’re using a big mascara wand/brush, keep a q-tip handy for quick fixes.
  5. Don’t pump the wand in and out of the bottle. This pushes air into the tube which will make the mascara dry out faster and cause clumping and flaking. Instead, gently twist the wand back and forth or in circular motions to pick up the desired amount of product.
  6. Another tip is to use mascara after you apply your eye shadow. This is so that whatever eyeshadow falls onto your eyelashes will be covered by the mascara.
  7. If you don’t trust your self with the mess, use a business card, or any other square card, to apply the mascara. See a supporting image below:

Is Mascara Primer Necessary?
There are the ladies who like to go the extra mile and invest in a mascara primer. Although this is not for everyone, and most mascaras come with a primer in-built, here are some of the reasons why you may want to invest in a primer.

  1. They are specially formulated to ensure your mascara sticks well to your eyelashes for a long period of time. This is great if you are going for events etc where you may sweat or cry.
  2. They help prevent flaking and smudging during the course of the day.
  3. They help give you fuller looking lashes because the primer provide a great foundation to start with. Some primers and even mascaras have small fibers, which cling to the eyelashes, so when you apply them your eyelashes will look fuller.
  4. Some primers contain moisturizing and conditioning ingredients which promote the health of your lashes.

How do I take it all off?
After all is said and done, it can be a little difficult to get your mascara off after at night. This is especially hectic if it is water proof.

So, what I recommend is putting a drop of coconut oil/olive oil on a cotton pad and using that to wipe your mascara off. If you do not have coconut/olive oil nearby, make sure you wipe all the mascara off with a face wipe or a makeup remover.

Please note that using water alone is not strong enough to get rid of mascara. Using it would only get a small part of it out, and the rest of your face will get stained with mascara residue.

As most women would know by now, you can tell a lot about someone through her makeup. This shoot is all about ‘talking’ through their makeup.

1. ElectricThis makeup is for the bride who isn’t afraid to have the spotlight on her on her big day. The most outstanding factor of this makeup obviously are the eyes. It features bold colours created using the Makeup Forever electric eyeshadow pallete and pink glitter from NYX (even though the glitter doesn’t show in the pictures). On the model’s lips are NYX’s extreme shine lip cream in ‘Candy Land’ which gives that gorgeous soft pink shade without being bright enough to overshadow the eyes.

2. Nude-itudeThis makeup is for the bride who wants to let her skin do all the talking, while flashing her confident attitude through her eyes. It features the new Dramatic Chromatic eye shadow pigment from NYX in “mocha” which highlights the eyes while keeping it subtle. The fierce eyeliner is Mac’s “fluidline” gel liner which adds attitude and some drama to the whole look.3. NefertitiThis makeup is for the bride who is all about that sultry golden glam. The makeup exudes sensuality and sophistication. It features gold pigment on the eyelids from Inglot and Mac’s “fluidline” gel liner for the double winged eyeliner. On the lips is NYX’s Glam lip gloss in “Aqua Luxe” which gives the illusion of very plump luscious lips with a very natural shade. It makes the lips look almost as if no colour was added to them. The cheek bones are also a high point of the entire look and they were bronzed out using The Balm Cosmetics Mary-Lou Manizer.4. Glitz ‘n’ GlamThis look is for the bride that wants just the right amount of glitz and glam that can be worn for both traditional and white wedding. Additionally it’s also perfect for a reception look. It features a glamorous cut-crease accentuated by gold glitter from NYX. On the lips are Nouba’s Millebacci liquid lipstick in 66 and NYX’s ‘natural’ extreme lip shine in the middle for a slight ombre effect.5. Bold-mineThis is for the modern unconventional bride who wants bold glamour but with a different kind of “fleek”. It’s soft and neutral on the lids but bold and daring on the waterline. This look features purple from Urban Decays “Electric” eyeshadow pallete on the waterline and pink glitter from NYX in the inner corner of the eyes. On the lips are Nouba’s Millebacci liquid lipstick in 45 and Mac’s Candy yum yum for this ferocious ombre effect.6. Purple DivaThis look is for the bride who is every inch a diva. She can rock Ankara or rock a Sari and still radiate with purple goodness. She isn’t afraid to be girly hence the playful use of the color purple. The eyes feature colors from Urban Decays electric pallete. For the ombre lips, I used Mac’s Candy Yum Yum and Dose of colours in Petals with a hint of NYX’s purple rain lip liner.***
