If the name Tokyo James sounds familiar, it’s probably because he is the Editor-in-Chief of MADE magazine, has curated a number of shows & collections in Nigeria and has been nominated for the Jaguar Lagos Fashion Awards 2015.

With his new Spring/Summer 2015 collection, the designer is providing an aesthetic that is not readily available in Nigerian fashion. The “Exist” collection is filled with faux fur & metallic silver coats, laid-back blazers, jackets, unique formal wear and more.

With experience working abroad in fashion capitals like the UK, New York and more; the collection seems to already be a hit with the fashion crowd.

Irrespective of the social divide you belong to, there are certain fashion items you must have in your wardrobe as a man. You don’t have to be rich to have these fashion items as there are relatively cheap yet classy ones. The most important thing is for you to know what these items are and why it would do you a world of good to have them in your wardrobe.

Native Attire
If you’re an African man it is important for you to have at least one native attire in your wardrobe. The attire is important as it reflects your roots and you’d always have one occasion or the other than would require you wear such attires. More so, it is essential you have at least one trendy piece which can be made by an array of Nigerian fashion designers that abound everywhere.

Handkerchief
The importance of the handkerchief has been grossly understated. It is normal to see men with running nose carrying one but having one for the occasional sneeze and cough is necessary given the fact that you don’t want to spread your germs around. Use one and don’t display it. Keep it stealthy.

Quality Wristwatch
It’s awkward to always have to pull out your phone to check the time. Having a wristwatch is not only fashionable but also comes with its usefulness. Imagine a cute lady you got your eyes on asks you for the time and you simply pull back your sleeves and reveal a classy choice of watch before revealing the time to her. This can make a world of difference.

A Sleek Leather Wallet
The wallet helps to keep your cash and ATM cards handy and as such is a must-have fashion accessory that every man should own. Leather wallets are great for both formal and casual attires and whether you choose a black or brown coloured wallet, it blends in and never goes out of fashion.

The Suit

It is important that you have at least one bespoke suit for whatever corporate event you will be attending. Even if you hardly attend events that require you wear a suit, still get one as It’s embarrassing to appear at formal events in casual wears. If you need only one suit, it’s ideal to buy a black coloured, pinstripe single-breasted suit. Look out for a classic cut that hardly goes out of style but would only require you to change your shirt and tie for different events.

A Tie
Of course! You’d require Ties to go along with your suit. It’s essential you have a variety of ties but going for a solid tie would do you a lot of good. You could also go for diagonal stripe ties but remember to go for trendy styles and colours if you wear ties on a regular basis.

Shoes and Belts
Perhaps the greatest fashion mishap you can undertake is to mismatch the colour of your belt with that of your shoes. Wearing black shoes and a black belt is a fashion fundamental and will complete your suave look for any occasion, be it casual or formal. As such you should have a pair of black leather shoes and a black leather belt.

Jeans

Blue jeans are a classic item you should have in your wardrobe. The colour looks good irrespective of the age of the jeans added to the fact that they are comfortable, versatile and can be combined with an array of shoes from sneakers to sandals, or loafers to provide a great sporty look.

Casual Shirt
It is essential to have Casual shirts such as a polo or button down in your wardrobe. They can go well with jeans or other casual chinos trousers.

Perfume/Body spray
Want to smell good? Then get yourself a bottle of perfume, roll on and body spray that smells cool and lasts longer. They will help to alleviate body odours that are common to the male specie.

Despite the mixed reactions of the shorts trend during men’s fashion week in years past, designers took up the challenge for Spring/Summer by re-introducing short styles as the new trend. While the shorts were inspired most probably by gear worn for sports, most of the styles on the runway were knee-length, ample leg shapes and wide-leg cuts. From leather to jerseys, here are ways to try the trend:

Match it up: Pair up with a matching blazer for a more formal than casual look.

The new nerd: pair up with sweaters for a laid-back look.

Go the coloured way with pretty pastels!

Make the Billionaire’s list with a rugged jeans shorts, plaid shirts and statement boots

    Get inspiration with white sartorial.

The wide-leg cut is the new men’s shorts.

Stay in trend with the wide-leg denim.

It looks like there is a new trend in Nigerian fashion with the growing inclusion of collections for Harmattan and Rainy seasons. With the absence of Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons in Nigeria, more designers are taking it upon themselves to design collections more tailored to the Nigerian audience.

A few weeks ago, we had a Rain collection by House of Marie, and then Josh Amor unveiled theirs. Now, menswear label FemToys is unveiling its Rainy/Harmattan 2015 collection.

Titled “Geometry By Toys“, the lookbook showcases a collective of smart casual pieces with bold colours that would suit any man’s wardrobe.

According to the Head Designer, Femi Adeyemi – “Sequel to the success of the brands polka and floral collections, there was a need to amalgamate patterns, hence the need for “Geometry.” Patterns and plain shapes like circles and polygons, as well as aztec, paisley, floral and spiral prints are featured, adding a soft & creative edge to the menswear collection.

Nigerian menswear label, Jason Porshe by Jason Samuel unveils the untold story and inspiration for its recently released collection for Spring/Summer 2015 – “Bella Vista“.

The collection shows the brands switch from using celebs like Alexx Ekubo andBryan Okwara to a new face – musician Ric Hassani. Ric poses against strong & rustic backgrounds that serve as a contrast and gives life to the inspiration of the pieces.

The designer explains his inspiration behind the collection – from the pieces to the fabric choices and prints. He said “I’m trying to learn & understand the secrets of God the greatest artist. Looking around trying to discover the greatness of creation in even the smallest things around us. So perfect, shapes and colors joined in such a perfect harmony. Nature is actually the best studio to shoot from – fashion has become my canvas and I’m ready to paint it how I like. Welcome to my world of inspiration.“

He continues, “Nature is my constant source of inspiration…nature is the source of my inspiration. That is how important Nature is to me and can be for you. Those fantastic colours that make the butterflies so distinctive and so perfectly suit the texture of their wings are an essential part of their elegance. To an extent this is true. I discovered how deep nature could be after a close follow up with one of my iconic mentors. So I’ve decided to make nature my canvas to help me realize this effect in my art and fashion. I discovered this deep part of me not too long ago, so I had the intense green surround my work, that perfect artistic green by the greatest artist in existence – GOD. How can we not take a cue from the greatest artist ever? Welcome to my inspiration.“

Nature comes into play with leopard prints, silhouettes of flying mammals like bats, floral prints and more.
