I received these just before traveling back to Nigeria for the christmas holidays and before I clapped my claws on them, they weren’t really on any of my lists. I had seen them all right but I just felt like they would be very similar to all the other matte lipsticks that I currently own.

Purple Rain - Blue based mid tone purple.

Kiss of Fire - Orange based Red. For everyone who is looking for a dupe for the Jioney long lasting lip gloss in No 18, this is it!!

These bad boys surprised me! They are similar to a few of the other liquid lip colors I own but they are slightly different, lol. They aren’t really liquid, they have a consistency that is slightly thick so they’d best be described as lip creams. They come with a doe foot applicator and my favorite thing about them is the way they apply. They have a consistency that gives you a type of control you don’t usually get with a lot of other liquid lip colors. They layer on nicely and last longer than your average matte lipsticks.

Nigerian women are especially regarded for their natural beauty and their great fashion sense, well maybe not quite as stylish as they’d have loved, my bad, the world practically is full of women not convinced about their elegance or dress sense. That brings an interesting topic for discussion, how can Nigerian women dress elegantly and fashionably?

The saying that you’re addressed the way you dress lends credence to the fact that looking good isn’t just a way to attract attention but the right kind of attraction. I’d imagine a classy lady would want her class to speak out through her dressing likewise her desire to attract the right kind of male admirers. So I offer these common sense tips on ways to shine and still not spend a fortune – yes you my dear Nigerian woman.

5 effective fashion tips for the elegant Nigerian Woman

Define your style your own way

The first step to being the elegant woman many Nigerian men would desire is to project yourself wholly – your likes, personality, intelligence - through your dressing. A person with a sharp mind can easily read personality and attitude in a person’s dressing and unless your intelligence is below par it should be uniquely projected as yours and yours only. Only you can define what your own style is, so find it and let it show itself in your dressing.

Give your dressing a smart mix of western and local fashion

The most elegant Nigerian women rock designer wears but interesting they’re mostly our local home bred designers. Nigerian designers have an interesting perspective about fusing western and African local designs to come up with clothing stand command attention. Why do Omotola or Tiwa Savage enjoy great following? They’re talents and good looks aside when they dress you can’t find a fault to pick on and what’s more they rock a great mix of western and local fashion.

Pick variety over trend

Using same examples above do these elegant Nigerian women follow the crowd when they dress? Absolutely not, what’s in vogue may be cute to rock but variety beats trend any day otherwise celebrities won’t pay heavily to enjoy designer wears.

Tip: Rock a unique beauty not instead of one that is popular

Be sparingly spontaneous with new outfits

If you have a new outfit you want to try on, let it be as meticulous as possible before taking it out. Most fashion crimes committed by celebrities on the red carpet comes from spontaneous new outfits that haven’t quite proved fashion

Tip: Know the flaws of your intended new outfit before wearing it out for the first time

Understand colours and Nigerian occasions

Are colours and occasions very demanding when it comes to dressing really well? Absolutely, colours tell stories about prevailing moods and situations whereas occasions demand a certain theme. Weddings need white, grey, blue or black outfits to match – for attendees - whereas romantic dates go well with red just as funerals demand black, if the occasion is casual a colour that perfectly fits in such as say green, white or blue would in addition to a unique and beautiful design make a powerful fashion statement.

Tip: the design, colour and occasion must rhyme

Draw from other elegant Nigerian women

Being a copycat isn’t bad if you can be unique, smooth and just as elegant as the one you’re copying. This isn’t about not being original but picking something really cool in the way another lady dresses and applying it to your fashion sense. It’s like understudying a role model not so you’ll become a carbon copy but to learn as much as you can from him to best your knowledge base or skill set.

Let’s face it, we don’t all check the expiry dates on our makeup products. It’s either the label is faded and we can’t even make out what is written on it, or we just don’t bother. Sometimes the only time we throw the tube away is when it’s finished. However, as common as this is, it’s not great for our skin.

Everything has an expiry date and it is important to know when to let go of these products so they don’t affect our skin negatively. Using expired products can lead to breakouts, cause damage to the skin and lead to more skin complications.

What’s the solution ensuring these never happen? Even though we don’t pay attention to the packs and labels of the products, sometimes our products start the breakup process by giving us some signs. From swelling to foul smells – our makeup products have many ways to let us know when its time to let go.

See 7 common products below and how they let us know when it might be time to toss them away.

1. Mascara
This can be quite tricky. Because of its nature – being dark and sticky, mascaras can be a great place for bacteria to thrive; and this could lead to eye infections. To be on the safe side, be sure to sniff the mascara when you buy it and after a while of use. This way you can keep track of the smell and know when it is smelling off.

2. Lipsticks
These are a girl’s best friend, but sometimes betrayal from a lipstick i lurking closer than you think. You can tell if your lipstick is getting close to its expiry date when it starts to change colour and smells different – almost toxic.

Another way is to actually apply it – when lipsticks start to feel drier than usual and doesn’t glide the way they used to, it’s time to toss it.

A great way to preserve your lipstick and help maintain its consistency is to pop it in the fridge. That will keep the moisture sealed and ready for application.

3. Liquid Foundations
A way to tell if your liquid foundation has gone bad is if it has changed texture. Regularly, oil-based foundations last for about 18 months while water-based foundations can go for about a year. If you notice a change in the consistency of the foundation or notice it getting dry, it might be time to throw it away.

4. Concealers
The number one job of a concealer is to cover skin imperfections like blemishes, dark sports etc. When you notice that your concealer is’t as creamy and isn’t doing that great of a job anymore, it could be expired. It may start to get dry, look thicker than usual and become difficult to apply smoothly. When this happens it is best to throw it away as it could lead to breakouts and clog pores.

5. Powder & Cream Blushes
“No, not the blush” – yes the blush! It is fun to think that blushes can do no wrong, but you might change your opinion when you’re staring at the pimples generating on your cheeks. Generally, powder blushes last longer than cream blushes because of their consistency – but this doesn’t mean it won’t eventually expire.

The key cause of quick expiry and dirt on the blush is from the blush brush – so, if you want to extend the life of your blush, keep your blush brush clean and tip-top shape. A great way to also extend the life of your blush is to keep it in a dark space – the reaction of light to the chemicals in the blush could change the colour and cause other reactions that could harm your skin.

6. Eyeshadows
Eyeshadows are a staple of any makeup kit, but as impossible as it seems they can expire. To check for telling signs that your eyeshadow has expired, monitor the colour shade and smell. When it starts to give off a bad smell or when your midnight blue starts to look like a muddy brown, you might want to think twice before you apply.

A general rule of thumb is to change your eyeshadows every 2-3 months to prevent running into complications.

7. Lip Glosses
I know I’m not the only one who has found an old lip gloss and thought “oh, I’ve been looking for you“, then try to apply it and smell something awful. I think lip glosses might be one of the top beauty products that expire quickly. They are usually exposed to the lips and we use our lips for a variety of things. So when you apply and re-apply, your lip gloss comes in contact with dirt & different particles over and over again.

To avoid this, try to wipe your lip gloss often with a wet wipe to clean off some germs, and be sure to change your glosses as often as possible.

I posted a picture on Instagram few days back asking what my lovely readers would like me to write about or do a pictorial on and I got more comments asking for highlight and contour. Hence, this post on how I do makeup highlight for women of color. So you know, I believe in doing highlights more than contour because we are mostly dark skinned. Therefore, we don’t really need to hide so much (except when it’s really necessary) because we are blessed with awesome facial features. Instead, we need to highlight our features more. Oh well, that’s just the way I feel and that’s why I’m showing you how to highlight for women of color in this post.

My Highlighting Technique

  1. I covered her entire face with Revlon ColorStay Foundation in Cappuccino.
  2. Then using a concealer brush, I applied L.A Girl Pro Conceal in Toast to her under eyes, nose, cupid’s bow, a little on the fore head and jaw.
  3. With my Original Beauty Blender, I blended the concealer into the skin till there were no harsh lines.
  4. Then, I set the concealer with Ben Nye powder in Topaz.

Before And After

Easy Peasy! There goes my highlighting technique.I hope you found it helpful and will give it a try. Have A Fantastic New Month, Lovelies!

Hugs and Kisses,
Missglam.

Jennifer Hudson recently made headlines as the new face of Johnson’s. As a mom who juggles a career of giving stellar Oscar performances, appearing onFox‘s hit series Empire and promoting the brand’s campaign on healthy baby development, managing her and her son’s hair & beauty can be challenging.

But judging from her recent interview with Essence.com, it seems J Hud has got everything under control. In the brief interview, Jennifer shares how she manages her hair & makeup, and takes care of her son’s full hair even when her schedule is packed.

Read excerpts below;

On how she handles her beauty regimen as a busy mom
Just because you have a child doesn’t mean you should completely let yourself go. The child always comes first, but don’t forget about yourself at the same time. [David Jr.] will sit and watch Mommy get her hair done or he’ll be like, ‘Mommy, what’s that you’re putting on your face?’ ‘Well it’s lipstick. I’m a girl so girls wear lipstick.’ My closet is huge so while Mommy’s in the closet, he runs around and plays. Or he plays in the jewelry and turns it into swords and toys and weapons and stuff like that. You kind of find a way to intertwine the things. I have two boys in the house—big David and little David. Mommy’s a girl so it takes a little longer for her to get ready. And he’s used to it now. He’s like, ‘Oh, Mommy’s getting ready!’.

On if managing beauty is easier with little boys or with little girls
My son has a lot of hair, it’s kind of like, almost the same thing. I was just washing his hair the other day. He always fusses about getting his hair washed but once we saw his hair thicken up with the shampoo in it he was like, ‘I love this!’

Her tip for new moms and their child’s hair
I’m definitely not a beautician. Just make sure you take care of it. Wash it good and be gentle with it. Don’t put the adult products in it. Make sure you put the baby products in it, cause you want them to keep their good grade of hair. Keep it delicate.

On her beauty regimen
I like to keep it basic. You know, cocoa butter on the face and my skin. The more simple, the better. When you’ve got on make up, wipe it off as soon as possible so you don’t mess up your skin. I want to be able to wear it when I want to, not because I need it. I like to keep skin fresh and breathing where it’s not always clogged up. I also get [regular] facials.

If you’re a #girl on the run (or on a tight budget), then you’re going to love these DIY beauty hacks. Sometimes we just don’t have the time or #money to invest in a $45 moisturizer or $35 eye pencil, but with a little ingenuity and products you most likely already have in your home, you can make your own. That’s right, you can actually create your own beauty products, and no, we’re not talking about some weird hippie granola deodorant. These DIY beauty hacks are the real deal:

1. DIY LIP GLOSS

One of the first DIY beauty hacks you may not have known you can craft yourself is lip gloss. First, you’re going to need some #coconut oil and un-petroleum jelly. This is going to serve as the creamy, glossy base. Next, in order to create the pigment, you’re going to grab (brace yourselves)…Crystal Light! Pick any flavor or shade you want, or even mix a few different flavors. Mix all of these ingredients together and you’ll have a #beautiful gloss that’s good enough to eat!

2. DIY NAIL POLISH

Having trouble finding the right shade of nail polish? You can actually make your own by mixing clear nail polish with your favorite eye shadow color. Either mix crumbled eye shadow directly into the nail polish bottle or mix it yourself on a piece of wax paper so that you can continue using the same clear polish but with different shades of eye shadow.

3. DIY BRONZER

Combine cocoa powder and #baby powder until you have achieved your desired shade of choice in a clean container. Brush it on with a fluffy #makeup brush just as you normally would. The beauty (no pun intended) of coca powder is that it has a brown tint to it instead of the cheap, shimmery orange tints that many bronzers have. Not only will this #look pretty, but it smells great, too! Remember to be light-handed with this, as you should with regular bronzer too.

4. DIY HAIRSPRAY

Ever been in a pinch for hairspray? All you need to do is boil chopped lemons in a saucepan of water, let cool, strain the seeds out, and transfer to a spray bottle. If you’ve ever put lemon juice in your hair in the summer to lighten it, you know that your hair has gotten stiff and sticky has a result. Well, that’s why this spray works so well, because it acts just like a sticky spray. Be sure to wash your #hair at the end of the day, though, because lemon can be pretty drying. As such, you should also only do this once in a blue moon.

1. STOCK UP ON HONEY

Honey is great for your morning toast or bowl of yogurt, but it also makes one of the top #things to keep on hand for your own DIY beauty tricks. Honey as antibacterial properties that make it ideal for using on your skin. Slather it on your #face, let it sit there for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water. What you get is smoother, healthier looking #skin. What more could you ask for?

2. MAKE YOUR OWN LIPSTICK COLOR

Can’t find the exact shade you want at the store? Take two other ones, combine them in a small container and melt them together for a few seconds in the microwave. Once the mixture hardens, you can slick it on with a brush. It’s so easy to lighten or darken a shade or create a whole new one using this technique.

3. MAKE YOUR SKIN SHIMMER

You don’t have to buy a fancy (or expensive) shimmer lotion to get that glow you crave. You can do it on your own with a kitchen staple that you probably never run out of. Simply mix a bit of olive oil into your traditional #body lotion. When you rub it in, you wind up with a nice healthy shine for not a lot of extra #money. Nice, right? And the bonus is that olive oil is good for your skin so you get double #benefits

4. USE COCONUT OIL IN YOUR HAIR

Coconut oil is good for more than homemade salad dressing. It has lots of healthy fats that are good for your strands. When you apply the oil directly to your hair, it infuses each strand with nutrients that help keep it hydrated, soft and smooth so you’ll always love the way your locks #look.

5. WHITEN YOUR OWN TEETH

You don’t have to spend #time at the dentist or shell out big dollars for home whitening kits. Simply mix a bit of #baking soda with lemon juice and brush your teeth with the mixture. Do this once a week or so and you’ll start seeing the pearly come out in all your teeth. Easy enou
