Sometimes the most beautiful designs & photos are so captivating – because they are simple. That’s what I like so much about the France/Benin-based brand Nash Prints It. The studio photography of their new collection focuses on showcasing West African prints worn by beautiful women. Simple, right? But so effective!

I basically love every single image as it exudes style, beauty, positive energy, confidence, coolness, elegance and hipness. All that without frills and props. My favorites are the short Kimono tops and the dress with the cut-out at the back.

Ever since a female rocked Agbada for the first time and got away with it, the fashion stuck fast with the feminine gender.

The most traditional way of rocking the three piece; pants, danshiki and agbada is to wear them together. But, rather than putting on the three piece all at once, designers have separated the fabric and added some obvious feminine touches that now make them irresistible.

Here are refreshing and progressive ways to pull off the Agbada fashion and still look chic.

Emerging fashion brand Tangerine Label has something for every lady that wants to look and feel like a young girl again – without the funny girly buns on the hair of course. This is perhaps the most neatly coordinated colourful and exuberant collection that we have seen in awhile. We love the fun and girly silhouttes that are loose enough to ensure easy movement but also fitting enough to flatter the wearer.

Ibeleye Egbuson the Abuja based designer behind the Tangerine Label has clearly carved a niche for her brand in a cluttered circle filled with more serious-y labels that are looking to push the boundaries in the fashion forward ready-to-wear sector – she has made high street fast fashion home and is slowly taking the reigns.

Meena is continuously breaking the mold with creative designs and it shows. In many cases designers are stuck between creating something new and awkward or maintaining the usual styles with print and fabric alternatives. However Meena pushes the barriers with real creative outfits that stand out and can be worn and admired.

There isn’t an overall theme to characterize the Ochiagha collection, however let’s say with some of the unique ideas stemming from each outfit, it is even possible to see a full collection make from each outfit.

Chu Suwannapha has been involved in working in the fashion industry for more than 25 years and despite being dubbed “The Prince of Prints”, his foray as a designer is recent.

This is the second year his label Chulaap has launched a collection, this time the Winter/Autumn 2016 menswear collection. It is titled “Make Art Not War”. According to Suwannapha, Chulaap’s ethos is about celebrating Africa.

“I want to give back to South Africa. I noticed that many designers tend to be very conceptual in their work, or focus on international trends. What you see is what you get with Chulaap.

“There are elements of cool inspired by street style and the clothes need to be wearable. I like to let the designs speak for themselves,” he says.

The result is bright African-inspired prints in multi-layers of textures, such as silk, tweed and wool. The collection is a combination of knits, layered on top cotton African prints, all in striking bold colours. In just two years, Chulaap’s signature style is defined, textures on textures and print on print with a retro and vintage look. He also uses Basotho blankets.

Suwannapha drew inspiration from the Instagram account of three brothers behind Joburg-based photographic collective, I See A Different You, who celebrate South African and African culture in their images.

As an example, Suwannapha says that the camouflage knit he designed is inspired from their images of the landscapes and the Lesotho mountains layered on top of each other. In another image, when the brothers are on the streets of Ghana, there is a stark contrast to the nature of their Lesotho photos.

“It is purely street, you see burnt cars and black smoke. So for me, the concept of this collection is ‘Unconventional Military’.”

The collection also draws oriental inspiration, with the prints of tigers featuring on a few garments repeatedly.

Suwannapha says he always incorporates South African designers into his work.

This time, the felt hats were by Simon & Mary, and the backpacks and earphones were by Pichulik. All the perspex and bullets pins are from Rings and Things.

Originally from Thailand, but now in Cape Town, Chulaap works as the fashion director behind lifestyle magazines such as You, Huisgenoot and Drum Magazine.

l Pre-orders for the collection can be done through Suwanannapha’s Instagram account @ChuSuwannapha or online at www.oxosi.com

African Prints‘ is one of the most versatile fabric around the world. Synonymous with West Africa, these print designs come in various forms but they all retain a certain richness, vibrancy, bold motifs making them stand out everytime.

The African Print has become a style item and one that inspires designs from domestic designers to international ones all over the world; Stella Jean, Duro Olowu and Dutch retail giant Vlisco are amongst the brands known to infuse a lot of prints into their designs.

There are easily reasons why the piece has become a style phenomenon across the globe and these 7 form reasons they remain evergreen all the world over:

                The Vibrant Patterns

Ankara made its way from the Indonesian industry it was created for into West Africa and became a style phenomenon. A common fabric in Africa because of its colorful features and tribal-like motifs, it is usually presented in 100% cotton with bold vibrant patterns.

                The Versatility

The African print has gained a fashionable global audience as it’s used on pieces everywhere around the world.

Known in different names in different places, it’s called ‘Dutch wax’ in Ghana, ‘Kanga prints’ in Tanzania and other East African countries, known as Ikat, Batik, mud cloth and so on.

Ankara is also referred to as /African prints/African Wax Prints/Holland Wax and more but one thing remains, they feature bold prints in different designs.

                Usually Colourful

African print was first introduced to the market as cheap mass produced imitations of Indonesian batik materials before they became synonymous with Africa (West Africa particularly)

It’s made via a Wax-Resist Dyeing Technique called Batik

The African print materials are made through an Indonesian wax-resist dyeing technique called Batik which entails a technique to make the fabric resist the dye from getting through to the entire fabric, thereby creating a pattern (the ultimate print that’s so desired)

                Origins are not totally African!

Ankara print fabrics are presented in whole; twelve (12) or half;six (6) yards . The now famous print was originally made for the Indonesian market but it became accepted in West Africa due to its flashy colors and bold tribal tendencies and became a symbol of traditional fashion till date.

From West Africa, this fabric became acceptable in different parts of the world influencing the works of notable designers who have at a time infused the fabric into their work or influenced their print details on piece.

Intentionally made for the Indonesian market by the Dutch but West Africa embraced it

African print has become a piece seen on A-list celebrities around the world, Rihanna’s famous Stella Jean look is purely ‘ankara’/print detailed, Solange knowles has been pictured in bold print looks and many more.

This made way for Nigeria based designers including Lisa Folawiyo known for her embellished African pieces shown over major runways in the world, as well as pictured on celebrities all over the World.

                Comes in 100% cotton material

Africa Print remains a fab piece not going anywhere soon if anything, its dynamics keep getting stronger by the day and because they come in 100% cotton they are versatile and there’s no limit to how they can be crafted.

The Fruche brand has once more reminded us of the real stuff that they are truly made up of. They have retraced their steps back to the career defining LFDW aesthetic that had a better half of the industry thinking “omg, who’re those kids?”. What has changed from a few days back to now? It’s that sweetened taste you have in your mouth when you walk into a confectionery store or fine sugar mill, it’s that taste that we are experiencing right now as we look at Fruche’s signature burst of colours with his womenswear and gender blurring menswear pieces.

“A boy’s best friend is his mother” is the powerful quote, off 1960 film- Psycho, that strongly opens the Fruche press letter. This is about the friendship between a boy and his mother, reflection, making old things new, pursuit of happiness and ultimately a juxtaposition of that boy’s aesthetics against that of his mother’s. Bright colours, cut outs and slits form the ground on which Fruchebuilds his womenswear collection, while volume and the absence of it (in some instances) advances his menswear agenda.

These are the stuffs that we have come to identify with Fruche; his ability to take risks with techniques and an unending supply of a kaleidoscope of bright colours—and it is safe to say that these signature elements are in no short supply, and even more importantly is the meaning that this collection title bears—Nkeiruka (named after the designer’s mother means – what is to come is greater)—most aptly conveys our thoughts on this emerging brand.

And thinking of everything even more profoundly and narrowly, indeed—true to Aristotle, happiness depends on one’s self!
