Oyindamola Ogundeyi started Fashpa.com out of frustration. A frustration of not being able to easily access good fashion at a great price in Nigeria, and then she saw an opportunity to leverage on technology to create an online platform to meet the need.

With over 10 years experience in internet and brand management, and working with various industries ranging from management consulting, banking and eBusiness and telecoms, she created Africa’s primary online fashion lifestyle brand that is dedicated to providing African consumers with access to fashion and lifestyle brands.

In 2004, Honey realised that there was a problem with pricing and distribution of good local brands in Nigeria, while other foreign brands were very expensive to buy in Nigeria. She kept researching the issue while she kept a 9-5 job and embraced the world class work ethics of the various big companies she worked for, including Google and Ericsson

Much later she grew interest in technology and fashion and decided to work on the idea of making fashion more accessible for Africans. In 2013, Fashpa.com launched with a small team and has gradually grown to be one of the most sought after fashion site in Nigeria.

Fashpa has partnered with celebrities like Seyi Shay, Tania Omotayo and other foreign and local name brands. Fashpa was also listed on Forbes.com as one of the leading online fashion retail store. Fashpa.com has been described as Africa’s ASOS for the similarities in their model and strong use of social media. Honey is driven by the desire to leave an impact and contribute to the growth of the African Economy through technology and fashion.

Foremost Nigerian designer Deola Sagoe dishes on challenges, passion and more in the Nigerian fashion industry to Elle SA while ultimately revealing a feature in the documentary, My Nigeria for Al Jazeera.

The designer who is has showcased around the world spoke candidly with Elle South Africa about her passion and more.

(Elle South Africa)

Excerpts:

ELLE: What sparked your passion and interest in fashion?

Coming from a place where the African fashion story wasn’t being told in its entirety, seeing as it was being told through the eyes of European designers who would pick up on more prevalent parts of the African culture during visits for inspiration, I felt there was a deeper story within, itching to be unveiled. The popular Maasai culture was indeed striking, but the Africa I was living in, my Africa, was going through a renaissance, which was characterised by an uncanny and quite contemporary combination of Western and African silhouettes. African fabrics have a truly unique quality and I felt I had a very important role to play in changing the perception of African fashion and in economically empowering local artisans, which is why I have consistently worked with native Nigerian fabrics, such as ‘Adire’ and ‘Aso Oke’, in every collection. ‘Komole’, my own authentic answer to every Nigerian’s yearning for an original interpretation and crafting of lace, is original from conceptualisation to crafting to final creation. Komole is now justifiably associated with top-tier attire for every occasion.

ELLE: How did your involvement in the documentary, My Nigeria, come about?

I believe this selection was based on merit and on the longevity and commitment to value and quality of the Deola Sagoe brand over the years, within the wider context of Nigeria as a fast-evolving country.

ELLE: How do you think the documentary will speak to women?

I believe it will inspire women to begin to take their destiny in their own hands and to realise that they have a role, which transcends traditional moulds and norms.

ELLE: What is your specific role in My Nigeria? How so your label ‘The House of Deola being featured?

The My Nigeria series consists of 30-minute clips on the Al Jazeera channel with a spotlight on the side of Nigeria, which historically has not been portrayed by the global media. The truth is, for every stereotype of corruption or extremism you hear of, there are a million motivated and driven Nigerians who add value and impact positively in and out of Nigeria. The aim of the story is to highlight the truth about Nigeria and change false or misguided perceptions and stereotypes. The Deola brand is being cast in the role of an effective and impactful organisation, particularly with regards to Nigeria’s image, and when shared will empower the people and enlighten the international community.

ELLE: What are some of the challenges faced by female designers in Nigeria?

The challenges facing Nigerian designers don’t impact women only. All Nigerian designers have to contend with poor access to training, infrastructure, distribution, retail, a lack of funding and intellectual property theft. These are things we are hoping will change in the near future.

ELLE: What’s next from the House of Deola Sagoe?

Komole Kandids is currently in the works and should be released sometime before the end of the year. I am particularly excited about this collection and it is quite close to my heart for a couple of reasons that I won’t disclose just yet…let’s keep an element of surprise! I can, however, say this collection will unveil the ‘blue blood’ in, and speak to, every woman at any level or phase of her life and for any occasion she might have in mind. In this ‘selfie’ age, everyday has its moments and everyday is an event, which you might want to capture on camera and keep for a lifetime.

My Nigeria is a series of six half-hour documentaries showcasing Africa’s most complex and populous country. The six half-hour films will go out in a prime time documentary slot (date and time still to be confirmed) to Al Jazeera’s global audience of over 250 million households across 130 countries.

4×4 are on a media run promoting their Tantalizing, Kpagam Kpagam records and CP’s Fashion Planet talked music, fashion and life under the spotlight.

The trio now currently under Don Jeff Records touching on their fashion sense compared their fashion statement to that of Nigerian celebrities.

Coded elaborated;

“Our fashion sense is just natural, I think it comes to us natural because as an entertainer, you have to look good anytime you are in front or behind the camera.

“They shouldn’t see you looking all shining on TV and the next minute they see you rugged. That I have seen in Nigeria a lot of times. I’m sorry to say this but I have seen it in Nigeria plenty of times.

But with Ghanaians and our musicians we have upped our game and you see an artist in town and they look very good. We are getting there. When it comes to looking good, female artists are also so on point. From movies, to music everyone is dressing really well. When you are on instagram you will realize several Ghanaian celebrities are sharing photos from photo-shoots they just had and it’s refreshing.

Captain Planet quickly added;

“Fashion Planet is my personal venture but if anyone wants to invest in it, I’m waiting for them. I am doing most of the street wears.”

What do you think, are Ghanaian Celebrities really dressing far more than Nigerian Celebrities??

Yoga pants are trending. I just recently read an article on the stylish sportswear phenomenon that drives nearly every brand to produce a sports line or offer yoga pants, to cash-in on the trend. Spearheading the yoga pants market is lululemon. A colleague first told me about the brand last year and stated that they had the most expensive but the best looking and fitting yoga pants she had ever owned. Since, I have checked out their website and considered buying a pair but just couldn’t bring myself to spend 100 USD or more on yoga pants.

Now the Los Angeles/Accra -based brand Osei-Duro has collaborated with lululemon to produce functional fashion with an Africa-inspired twist: “Osei-Duro has designed two exclusive hand-batiked prints for lululemon lab that will be digitally printed onto technical active wear.” The collection includes bras, tights, bodysuits and also tanks and shorts for men. All available online via www.garmentory.com. So for a unique pair of printed yoga pants I might be willing to spend 100 bucks. Let’s see…

Just a side note: The campaign images look a bit eerie and remind me of stills from a Sci-Fi movie, I kind of expected something different for an Africa-inspired fitwear collection, but well.

During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, Africa Fashion Day Berlin (AFDB) presented emerging designers with African background to Germany’s fashion capital. At one of Europe’s largest fashion fairs, the PREMIUM International Trade Show, the collections from Alexandra Tamele, Gloria Wavamunno and Adama Paris were exhibited.

AFDB stands out from other Africa-focused fashion events in Europe, as organizer Beatrace Oola focuses on quality instead of quantity, so that only a handful of designers – a mixture of more established designers like Adama Paris and newbies like Alexandra Tamele – get a chance to present their latest collection.

Together with the cooperation partners Bolingo and MoLateef, Africa Fashion Day Berlin invited at the end of the week to a Fashion Showcase titled “Fashion Africa Now” that presented the designs from Nomi by Naomi, Negassi, Alexandra Tamele, Adama Paris and Gloria Wavamunno. AFDB ended the event with a big party that I unfortunately missed, as I had already left Berlin. But I heard it was fab!
